چکیده

Introduction Paylean® (ractopamine hydrochloride) was approved in December 1999 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as a feed ingredient in commercial pork production, specifically in finisher swine (Paylean® Technical Manual, 2001). Paylean® is a ß-adrenergic agonist that acts by directing nutrients away from fat deposition to increase the amount of lean pork in a carcass. Paylean® enhances feed efficiency and increases growth rate, resulting in fewer days to market and less feed for equivalent lean growth (Anderson, et al., 1991).

Analysis of Economically Optimal Nutrition and Marketing Strategies for Paylean@ Usage in Hog Production

An approach to the development of the economically optimal dietary concentration of Paylean, duration of the Paylean feeding, and dietary lysine concentration for finishing hog production is presented. A simulation model describing daily growth of hogs under different Paylean and lysine concentration combinations was adapted for optimizing nutrition and marketing when feed is supplemented with ...

Evaluation of three genetic populations of pigs for response to increasing levels of Paylean

In the past several years, consumer demand has forced the swine industry to select for an animal with increased percent lean and higher lean accretion rates. Paylean is a technology that has been shown to increase carcass leanness while improving growth performance when fed to finishing pigs. It has been documented that average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (F:G) are improved when feedin...

Risk factors associated with Salmonella enterica prevalence in three-site swine production systems in North Carolina, USA.

The goal of this study was to identify risk factors associated with increased fecal shedding of Salmonella enterica (SE) in groups of market swine reared in large three-site production units. We conducted an intensive, long-term investigation of potential management and environmental risk factors operating during the growing phase of pig production. Data regarding finisher site characteristics,...

Antibiotic resistant bacterial profiles of anaerobic swine lagoon effluent.

Although land application of swine (Sus scrofa) manure lagoon effluent is a common and effective method of disposal, the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, both pathogenic and commensal can complicate already understood issues associated with its safe disposal. The aim of this study was to assess antibiotic resistance in swine lagoon bacteria from sow, nursery, and finisher farms in the...

Ammonia emissions from Swine waste lagoons in the Utah great basin.

In animal production systems (poultry, beef, and swine), current production, storage, and disposal techniques present a challenge to manage wastes to minimize the emissions of trace gases within relatively small geographical areas. Physical and chemical parameters were measured on primary and secondary lagoons on three different swine farming systems, three replicates each, in the Central Great...
